| The inland canal Otrokovice – Rohatec was built between 1934 and 1938 on two independent initiatives – the first one was the higher level of underground water following the Morava River regulation, while the other one was the implementation of an old dream to interconnect the rivers Danube, Odra and Elbe. After 1948, the waterway was not extended more and the traffic was terminated in 1960 because of its economic inefficiency. The irrigation of ploughed-up meadows was terminated, too.Nowadays the Bata Canal as a tourist waterway offers plenty of opportunities for cruises, water tourism and cycling. The visitors to the Bata Canal can borrow a small motor boat for five to 12 persons, which they can drive by themselves so they can sail wherever they wish; or they can choose a cruise with a big ship intended for bigger groups of persons. Such trips include mostly the regular lanes with a certain route and a shorter sailing period, e.g. 2 – 4 hours. The cruises on small boats or bigger ships can include also the visits to different local sights. Upon a wish, it is possible to provide the tourists with refreshment or meal on the ship.A stay on a houseboat is a popular style how to spend the holidays – both for adventurers and for families with children. The houseboats are fitted for a comfortable stay of 4 – 12 persons; one can take bikes or even barbecue. The gourmets can join the cruises to the Morava meanders. The meanders can be sailed just on canoes because here are shallowness and many shoals. The surrounding nature, however, is fascinating and suitable for both camping and bathing because the water is pure. The waterway is opened to the private boat owners and the only “limitation” is the operation of lock chambers.A tourist can choose all the shown from the offer of individual boat hire-offices – there are 12 hire-offices along the waterway. It is not usual to sail on the whole Bata Canal. It would be not only time-consuming and expensive, but also tiring. The boat hire-offices are located along the entire waterway so that a tourist can choose. | |
