Mahen Theatre

The Neo Renaissance Mahen Theatre was built in 1881–1882 according to the project by F. Fellner and H. Helmer, the first theatre building in Europe fully illuminated by electric bulbs – “Edison bulbs”.

1365 electric bulbs in the Mahen Theatre – a former German Theatre Na hradbách – were lit for the first time on November 14, 1882. Until 1900 the theatre had its own small power station at No. 5, Vhká Street. In 1911 T. A. Edison came in person to see a work of his company. Today the Mahen theatre is a drama stage of the Brno National Theatre.
